Us, 20 Minutes from Now

The same car and a couple matching
us drives by a little faster, aging
quicker with more miles on the tires,
more wear on the brakes
making me wonder about ifs and
whens and hows and whats
supposing it is possible to make
wishes into change or morph
fantasies into TV sitcom families,
imaginations into actual events
with soccer balls of pecan pie
and turn high school football
heroes into Baseball Dads, make
the head cheerleader a Brownie
Mom and keep those fabulous abs,
those skinny legs with melon laden
calves or breasts until that Halloween
mask appears by your bedside.
But when the brakes start to grab
and the car begins to shake you
have to wonder if it's worth it to
have them fixed or maybe a
trade-in is well overdue. That new
car smell is potent and some
places it's even sold in a can that
anyone can buy anytime
anywhere leaving them with the
lingering decision to use it or to
stick it in the garage on a shelf
ready for immediate consumption.
